Sunshine on unions
Not much talked about, at least in my circles, is a bill before the federal parliament (having passed second reading) that would require all Canadian unions to disclose how much of their members’ union dues they spend on political activity. The amount of money in play is significant - $4.5 billion every year, representing about two weeks’ pay for each union member. more
My hope is that the bill would also force the unions to disclose how much they pay their staff. I think union members and the public in general might be gobsmacked by how much the union bosses pay themselves - both in terms of lavish salaries, benefits, and pensions, and also fabulous travel perks, vacations, and other goodies of that nature. They are definitely living the good life.
If the unions didn’t have something to hide in terms of how much they spend and on what, they wouldn’t be fighting Bill C-377 so hard. I say - let’s find out what they’re trying to hide. H/T JE
