SCHOOL FOR THOUGHT

Mix and match schooling

It’s been 150 years or so since public education was invented, and over the years we’ve come to think of education as proceeding in a straight line - kindergarten, grade school, high school, post-secondary, all in big box schools in classes with 20-odd other students of the same age. But just because we’ve gotten used to this model doesn’t mean it’s the only (or best) possibility.

Here’s an article about the way that education in Florida is evolving - towards what the author calls “hybrid’ schooling. With all the new school choice options now available in Florida, these lucky students can mix and match their schooling to suit their own unique profile - for example, attending classes at more than one specialized school; enrolling in on-line courses, including the Florida Virtual School; and taking dual-enrollment courses at post-secondary institutions.

In addition to the obvious educational benefits of hybrid schooling, this customized approach to education offers students a richer, more varied social experience.
