The New Haven Experiment

February 23, 2012 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 12:35 PM

Many people think that perhaps the most pernicious aspect of most teachers’ unions is their determination to protect bad teachers. These people will no doubt be heartened by an ongoing experiment in New Haven, CN, where - in exchange for higher pay and benefits - the teachers’ union is actually allowing weak teachers to be fired. Last year, 34 New Haven teachers (out of 1800 teachers) were shown the door, and this year another 50 teachers have been put on notice. Given recent advances in our understanding of just how crucial teachers are to children’s futures, this is a very important initiative.

Of course, it couldn’t happen in Ontario for all kinds of reasons - not least of which is the Ontario government’s economic-basket-case status. The province can no longer afford to bribe its teachers’ unions, and temperatures will have to drop to unprecedently-low levels in the place of everlasting fire before Ontario teachers’ unions would voluntarily surrender teacher tenure provisions.  H/T LJCD

So called “bad teachers” is a phony issue, just another right wing talking point.

Nice to see some state leadership in Connecticut. Too bad we have no leadership to speak of here in Ontario.

You’re correct Malkin.  Looks like Doug’s fishing for a sucker to take bait that has nothing to do with the positive action being taken to deal with bad teachers in Connecticut.

No fish biting today.

The key issue to fix this formula is strong puplic awareness and stand ,,, the silent majority start to speak .

As a trustee in the former Toronto board, we fired about 15 teachers every year. Many were probationary so that is easy.

Nobody calls a press conference, they are quietly shown the door.

“Many were probationary so that is easy.”

That may be Doug, but also be totally up front - since Mike Harris there have no longer been any probationary contracts.

You do understand that aft.org is the American Federation of Teachers, right?  Not necessarily the best source of unbiased or substantive analysis on teacher-related issues.

Sorta like quoting the Canadian Bankers Association on bank service charges.

Of course I understand. The point is to expose you and others to what the argument looks like from the other direction.
