The Finnish Holy Grail

According to this article, there is already a fair amount of school choice and competition in Finland. It's odd, don't you think, that the Finland boosters haven't included Finland's free schools in their list of positive factors....

POSTED ON BEHALF OF DOUG

ONE

1) There are virtually no private schools in Finland

2) Free schools are public schools akin to our “Alternative” schools.

3) No tuition

4) Schools for Swedish speaking citizens are like French schools in Ontario. Public schools for Swedish speaking Finns.

Sweden DOES have many schools similar to charter/voucher schools. That is why for the first time in a century income inequality is growing rapidly leading to riots all over the country.

TWO

Sweden has a more conservative government now so naturally they have riots all over the nation. Finland? Peaceful and satisfied.

THREE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden_general_election,_2010

Although the Social-Democrats are the largest party in Sweden, a right of centre coalition has an edge in parliament and as such is making conservative decisions about the economy and schools. As a result there are riots about inequality in Sweden. They will learn.

Who do you think you are kidding, Doug?

Income inequality is growing leaps and bounds right across the developed countries in the world. The great rush to be first and reached the same levels of income inequality as China has.

As for the riots and protests, its happening across Europe including Finland. Inequality? No, and far from it. One gets real testy when there is not enough jobs to go around, and then the government turn around and floods the job market with cheap cheap foreign labour. One gets even more testy, when the universities are flooded with foreign students who are grabbing all the available seats. Then we have the youth in Europe, who just discovered the 12 years of schooling was to no avail, because they are in need of intensive tutoring of learning the basics that are not taught in the public schools so they can passed their courses. Lots of complaints from Spain and yes even Finland.

On another note, opening up a tutoring business in Europe is quite the growth industry in Europe. Even when universities are free, the universities are only open to the students that have met the criteria in grades.

How about some equality in the public education system, Doug? The kind that gives each and every student the skills that they need to succeed in work and post-secondary education, without having the need to buy the services of a private tutor?
