Sunday at the Movies (Democrats for Education Reform)

May 26, 2013 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 06:02 AM

Traditionally in the US, the Democratic Party has opposed school choice (because of their union ties) even though this opposition is devastating for the party's ostensible main constituency - disadvantaged families. Now comes a reform branch of the Democratic Party that supports school choice. Here is their first (of a series) video on education reform. The highlight of the video is Howard Fuller's talk, which begins at about the 10-minute mark. The sound goes wonky for a while but, if you hang in for a bit, it comes back.

Where are Canada’s Dr. Fullers ?..and the cadre of other inflamed, disadvantaged minorities who have been fired on their mission by generations of abuse based upon race and colour ?

For better and for worse, Canada does not have the breadth of the abused who form the large and substantial visible population from whence the “new reform democrats arise”. Here we deal with an educational system that has largely set rationality and effectiveness aside in the interest of political favouritism and cronyism. Formal educational initiatives of any kind are closely linked with pay back for political support coupled with the empty rhetoric of social egalitarianism and vicious condescending derision for any kind dissent.

The divide between unionized public employees and their taxpaying supporters continues to grow wider. Regardless of rhetoric, it is common man abusing common man to which no good end can come.  The Dr. Fullers of the world can readily be dismissed in Canada because Canada has yet to fully foster a broad and substantial underclass. Coming very soon to a community near you.

To add to Frank’s brilliant recap - in Canada they have been drinking the kool-aid of education by social-economic class. Dr. Fuller’s address speaks to the great underclass where education is delivered according to the social-economic indicators wholly created by the belief and value systems of the governing powers within and outside of the public education system. To which, as Dr. Fuller has expressed using blacks as an example, Black Americans are now welcome to sit in the restaurants, but now they can’t read the menu.

Social egalitarianism in the public education system, is all about welcoming one and all, offering a diverse menu of educational opportunities and everyone has EQUAL access. The only problem is, only a minority of a typical classroom can take advantage of the educational opportunities because the public education system does not GUARANTEE the tools and skills to access the educational opportunities.

Another way of looking at it, is the inclusive classroom. All are welcome, but don’t bother to request the tools and skills because its not on the menu of the inclusive classroom.

Yes coming through to a community near you, the great underclass will be cutting and hacking their way through a public education system who are intent to keep the status-quo at all costs. Soon, a meeting of the minds will meet at the point of convergence in Canada. Its coming in Canada, in the form of the widening academic inequity gaps found in any typical inclusive classroom, that does not provide the tools and skills to access and take advantage of the education opportunities.

Otherwise, why bother attending a school .........if the outcomes for their children is a series of locked access doors, and the keys to the access doors are the tools and skills needed to unlock and take advantage of the educational opportunities.

Where are the Dr. Fullers?  Well some were in Alberta (Dr. Joe Freedman) and they got charter schools over 15 years ago.  The rest of the country is still under the spell of the union-controlled education system that screams the problems is ‘not enough money.’  Sad but true.  SQE is the only group saying otherwise.

Today the ‘people who aren’t against education’ have come out with another report that states the obvious—that low income area schools ID more kids as special needs, have less gifted students, etc.  What they will NEVER recommend is the chance for parents to get out of those schools and choose something better.  Guess what the solution is?  You got it. ($$$)
