What Educators Don’t Want You to Learn

June 03, 2016 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 06:48 AM

A few years back, the Los Angeles Times started publishing ratings on all the local public school teachers, outraging the local teachers' union. Now a Virginia resident is seeking to do the same thing. It went to court, where the judge ordered the information released, albeit with the students' names redacted. Even so, it is now possible to find out the teachers whose students are learning a lot - and the teachers whose students are learning very little. Naturally, the local department of education and the teachers' union are pursuing more legal measures.  more

Perhaps these educators are worried about their teachers' self esteem, I don't know. But it seems to me that kids' futures should trump teachers' self esteem or educrats' self-interest. Does anyone disagree?

I think that every teacher should be evaluated. Giving a rating to a school ( especially when the popularity of tutoring centers is high) is rather pointless. Problems start in the classroom ... If the rating of a teacher is bad this should only give an incentive to perform better the next year.  After all nobody thinks that giving a bad mark to a student damages his self esteem. smile
