Timely Advice

March 31, 2010 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 05:33 AM

Dear Aunt Malkin,

Every night I spend two to three hours working with my eight-year-old son and six-year-old daughter teaching them the basic skills and knowledge they’re not learning at school. Coupled with the fact that I also have an active preschooler to attend to, I definitely have my hands full! But I am wondering whether there is something else I should be doing (please say no). Signed, Busy in Brampton

Dear Busy,

I’m afraid I do have one more suggestion for you - but you should think of it in terms of an investment that might save you a lot of time in the future, as opposed to just one more chore. Based on what you have written, it sounds to me as if your kids are attending their neighbourhood school even though it’s not doing such a hot job. You never know, there may be another school in your area that is much better… And April is such a good time for school shopping!

In my book, How to Get the Right Education for your Child, I outline ways of searching out and evaluating other schools. I also make suggestions regarding tactful ways to request a transfer to a better publicly-funded school. And, if it turns out you’re stuck with your neighbourhood school, I include advice on how to identify and request the school’s best teachers for next grade. I would be happy to send you a free copy of my book on request.

Regards, Aunt Malkin

I am going to do my little bit, spreading, How to Get The Right Education For Your Child, to the many Canadian parents that find themselves on other sites, seeking information.
In Canada, the biggest problem a parent faces is the lack of information that has a Canadian focus. Many of parent’s frustration lie within not knowing there is some alternatives, methods of education, and the whys’ the public education system are pushing out students, that lacks crucial and essential knowledge for adulthood.
One result, due to the public education structure, is parents who are spending anywhere between 2 to 5 hours, after school working on basics or foundational skills, so their child can participate in the classroom the following day. Parents soon discover, that this type of home education, is actively discourage within the public education system, for many reasons but the main general theme is shows the inadequacies and inequities of the public school system.

So be prepared for increase traffic onto SQE, and the passing of the book, How To Get The Right Education For Your Child. I will be doing my little part in this part of Canada, and start providing valuable information and knowledge, including books that will give parents the knowledge needed to navigate education for their children.

Yes, this book has concrete, useful advice as to how we could help our children.

It was very helpful to me and I recommended this book and the “Stairway to Reading” program many times to friends and aquintances that were unhappy and shocked as to how not only their children were not learning but as to how the teachers implied that there was a problem with their child or with their family environment.

There was no problem with their child other than not being taught well.

The funniest thing of all is that some parents after using “Stairway to Reading” to teach their children how to read were told by the very same teachers ..
“See how you worried for nothing? Your child just wasn’t ready. Now that he is ready he is reading very well !?!”

I will continue to recommend these resources because they work.
That’s the least I can do.

Give it a rest Doug. At least Malkin’s out in the open with her promotion and not having to provoke discussion to try and lure folks to the dark side.

Would that same LOL apply to your own sentiments hoisting the private sector marketing techniques of advertising on your own website and then slagging others?

If I may add, ALL of SQE’s materials:  Stairway to Reading and Math remedial program, our studies, pamphlets, and lending library,  along with Malkin’s book, are made available FREE to our readers.

Let’s see 6 hrs of school, 1+ hour bus ride, plus 2 hours homework, then an hour of Kumon math, guides/scouts, swimming lessons, music lessons, soccer, hockey, practice, pushing your child (ie. living your dreams through your child) academically or in sports…...I could go on and on….
How long is your work day? How about your child’s?

Our solution is homeschool and then they’re done by noon, early afternoon at the latest. Then bit of exercise and that even may do the parent some good smile
If you think about it you’re are already doing it and homeschool is way less stressful on the child.

good point Mark.  Isn’t it amazing how much valuable time is wasted in school!
