Sunday at the Movies (US Round-Up)

March 25, 2012 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 08:23 AM

Here’s a short clip featuring our old friend Bob Bowdon, who gives a quick overview of educational action in the US and then highlights two important stories. The first concerns a Seattle study which found that African-born black students were doing significantly better than American-born black students, suggesting that the roots of the black/white achievement gap are cultural, not racial. The second concerns an attack on charter schools in New York, which was jointly launched by one of the teachers’ unions and the NAACP. This would seen somewhat incongruous on the face of it, since the NAACP is supposed to be working for the benefit of black Americans - yet the charter schools in question were serving (and serving well) mostly disadvantaged black kids. It then was learned that the NAACP was on the payroll of the teachers’ union, suggesting that the NAACP cares more about money than it does about the welfare of the black students in the charter schools. NAACP’s on teachers’ union payroll?  Both are terrible culprits who are denying many children a chance at a good future.  As terrible as all of this all, I suppose it’s better to know what some groups will stoop to.  What’s the expression:  ‘armed with knowledge’...

“It then was learned that the NAACP was on the payroll of the teachers’ union.”

Funny, didn’t read that in the NY Times article.  You might want to actually read it to get all the facts (You will find it here:  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/11/nyregion/naacp-on-defensive-for-suit-against-charter-schools.html).  Apparently, this has been going on for some time until Mr. Bowden put his two cents in.  I thought we were supposed to stop the baseless attacks and personal slurs that drove Mr. Meyers away?  An organization is a business entity - you have no more right to sully their reputation as anyone else.

It is the NAACP’s mission to ensure access to education for ALL children of colour, not just charter school children.  If you actually read the article, you will find out that this debate is about shared facilities.  Public school students had to eat their lunch so early, “... it might as well have been breakfast…”. Other public school students were denied access to the school library because the charter school was using it.

Bev, you said, “What’s the expression:  ‘armed with knowledge’...”  Yes, let’s try that, and not rumour mongering and slurs.
