Sunday at the Movies (Idiotic Teaching Methods)

October 12, 2014 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 06:36 AM

This video purports to help students remember that 9 + 6 = 15. To me, the video is a wonderful illustration of how badly a good idea can be implemented. When I was teaching my own kids their number facts (because their school didn't) and I wanted to teach 6 + 9, I just put 10 jellybeans in one pile and 5 jellybeans in another pile and had my kid move a jellybean from the 10 pile to the 5 pile. Then they got to eat a jellybean.

In fairness, I don’t think this should be labelled an idiotic teaching method. I don’t see a big difference between how you taught it and this method.  Both methods try to show that numbers are made up of other numbers, and use that to help arrive at an answer.

Of course I understand the approach.
But in my opinion it is a strange Method. Using this, our children will need much time to calculate and to get a simple sum.
