Here's a clip of Danny Devito telling the shareholders of a wire and cable company that they have been obsoleted. It's a bit of a stretch, but it would be possible to apply Danny's comments to the current education delivery system. Instead of "fibre optics", think "online learning".

Nobody seriously thinks MOOCs and related have much to do with the future.

The following were going to REVOLUTIONIZE education:

Radio, film, film strips, record players, TV, VCR, computers, internet, ....

Technology has very little impact on education. Some boards are throwing out textbooks in favour of ipads. They see no learning gains nor any financial savings.

The current education delivery system is dead on arrival. Dead as a horse, where keeping the status quo is the mission goal of the public education system.

It will certainly be hasten to be officially called dead, by the arrest and charged of one of the top education gurus for 7 counts of seven counts of child exploitation.”  One Ben Levin, the grand keeper of the status quo in all things public education.

And like the stockholders, the public shareholders composed of parents, students and taxpayers should seriously questioned the ‘status-quo’ public education system of the iffy quality of education services being delivered.

The issue not whether MOOCs will change education as it is argued other technology have not.

The issue is whether MOOCs will change the marketing of or access to education .  And that is different than than the effect of various technologies on education itself.
