Sex-Ed Controversy

Sex-Ed Controversy
April 22, 2010 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 01:21 PM

As a result of backlash from several parent communities, this afternoon the Premier of Ontario backed down on implementing that controversial new health curriculum.  According to Premier McGuinty, parents in Ontario just didn't know what the ministry of education was working on and they should have consulted more. Well duh. Since you never ask us Mr. Premier, no wonder.

I'll be on CBC late this afternoon to discuss this issue.

Parents move the Prem. to back down. As it should be.
I do believe that parents knew exactly what all of this bs was going to mean!!
If Dalton wants those votes he has to pay attention to the choices parents wish for their kids. Sex education to pre-tweens isn’t one of them!

Wonderful news!

Posted by notasheep on 04/22 at 01:39 PM

The best part of all of this is while Dalton was in London backing off this issue his caucus was defending it at Queen’s Park. Are we surprised?

Posted by Chuck on 04/22 at 03:05 PM

Dalton realized his mistake was, like public sector wage controls, he needs to say this now until AFTER the election. 2011 is too close.

If anybody needs help with sex education it is the catholic church. I’m not sure they are in a position right now to lecture anybody.

Doug!

Sanger!  Kinsey!  Mead! Johanson!  Siecus!  Champions all of turning schools from halls of learning to places where adults could talk dirty with children not their own, without being arrested.

Do you have any idea at all of the mess going on in the lives and health of young people?  Read some medical journals and you’ll see stuff you’ll never find out from the Toronto Star.

Isn’t it ironic that the massive squadrons of fire trucks sent to put out the fiery conseqences of gender fender benders, the fires have become bigger and more out of control.

Welll Doretta missed you on cbc but maybe just as well.  They interviewed a guy from SIECUS and the announcer, female, was trotting out the salacious vocabulary, just for practice maybe.  Said they’re doing a full show Friday or next week.  I suppose she’ll have a full list prepared by then.

Posted by Charles Tysoe on 04/22 at 11:05 PM

I worry far more about the sex lives of evangelical pastors and catholic priests both of whom seem to be the hallmark of perversion and hypocracy and they want to lecture others? Get Jimmy Swaggert and the Pope to tell us about sex ed. No thank you. McGuinty demonstrated weakness in the face of voters who never voted for him in the past and will never vote for him in the future. These are the people you ignore.

Posted by Doug on 04/23 at 07:37 AM

Yes, and while you’re at compiling your list Doug please don’t forget to include those educator-perverts who have been caught preying on children. Educators don’t come with the “pervert” label stamped on their foreheads - neither does it show up on police checks. Wasn’t there a fellow just this week?

If you dare to excuse those you have no right to fly the sanctimonious flag here.

Posted by Chuck on 04/23 at 08:59 AM

Yep….. what was that teacher in Peterborough charged with? how about the award winning one in Regina? How about the one in London? and Pickering? and Welland? and Brampton? Liverpool NS? and the one in Timmins (Colbalt)?

Doug what is the stats on the number of pardons that had to be given to teachers when mandatory police checks came into effect? I know it was all just minor stuff like pot possession and shoplifting.  Just youthful misadventure right?
So, your the man with all the numbers, what are those stats?

Posted by Mark H. on 04/23 at 11:15 AM

The teachers are not fighting people having more information younger.

There are a lot of adult former alterboys who wish they knew more a bit younger and a lot of pain would have been saved from the pedophile priests.

Posted by Doug on 04/23 at 01:14 PM

Mr. Little,

Not to try and change the subject or anything, but what about Sanger, Kinsey, Mead, Johanson, and as a bonus let’s throw in Freud and his disciples.  C’mon Mr. Little; assure your audience that these racists, liars and perverts have NOTHING whatever to do with the “information” your colleagues want to “share” with the innocents.

Say… how come it’s ok to “BASH” Catholics and Evangelicals… not to say they shouldn’t be under stricter scrutiny than institutions that don’t exist by divine mandate, they absolutely should and must…  but you put out a lengthy list previously of activities you consider “teacher bashing”; basically anything except undiluted praise…  how come it’s ok to bash the religions but anything except praise for public education is ‘bashing’.

Hardly seems fair, does it?

Posted by Charles Tysoe on 04/23 at 09:12 PM

Sue Johanson, by the way, by her own admission, got her start in helpful “sex education” by taking the under-age daughter of a neighbour to Buffalo for an abortion, without her parent’s knowledge or consent.

That’s educational integrity for you eh?

Posted by Charles Tysoe on 04/23 at 09:14 PM

Some of the better minds and humaniterians of the century. They certainly expanded our understanding of human sexuality. Sue Johanson is just great. I’ve seen her work and know her fairly well.

You don’t think the vile pervs and pedophiles of the church had it coming. You seem to want to find some sickies Charles, go for your pastors and priests.

Posted by Doug on 04/23 at 09:25 PM

Doug, I’m beginning to think that you can’t read or spell. And that you are proud of your ignorance.  I’m not here defending any church; I just wrote that those who claim divine mandate must be held to a higher standard.

This is a discussion about education, not religion. You don’t seem to have realized that yet.  So you have to give acccount for these marvellous secular saints of yours.

Are you familiar at all with the work of Freeman on Margaret Mead, and of Judith Riessmann on Kinsey?  You have some catching up to do, Doug.  You seem to be the one stuck in the ‘fifites.

Posted by Charles on 04/23 at 09:40 PM

Johanson: next time you see her, ask her about the abortion.  Read about it in a profile of her in a Canadian magazine.  I have it archived somewhere.

In loco parentis, alright.

Posted by Charles on 04/23 at 09:43 PM

I have no real problem with abortion Charles, do you?

Posted by Doug on 04/23 at 09:54 PM

Why doesn’t it surprise me that Doug would use abortion as bait. He’s an opportunist who would like to divide, don’t fall for his crap.

Posted by Mark H. on 04/24 at 06:50 AM

Only responding to Charles???

Posted by Doug on 04/24 at 09:15 AM

The gentleman is referring to what I understand are often called “Trolls” on other sites;  to behave as a Troll, by baiting, or to feed Trolls is strictly prohibited and often earns a ban.

Posted by Charles on 04/24 at 10:33 AM

The question Charles is, is this an open forum on education or is there a litmus test?

Posted by Doug on 04/24 at 11:55 AM

Education.  And question on the table was, bring to the forum some up-to-date information on these folk you call marvellous humanitarians; the work of Derek Freeman exposing the lies and incompetence of Margaret Mead; and the work of Judith Reisman detailing the grotesque and abusive methods of Kinsey.

By your own testimony as an influential educator, these folk are highly admired in your field.  The question is WHY?

You either don’t know, don’t care to know, or are so captivated by the god-like delusions of progressive education that you have no need for for resources from “Non-educational” sources; resources like up-to-date research, countervailing evidence.

After all, if it were true, you would know about it.

Posted by Charles on 04/24 at 12:22 PM

I’m always impressed by sites that allow readers to exchange comments on the issues being raised.

It’d be the difference between sites that have a degree of respect for visitors and ones that are just soapboxes for their owners.

Maybe the “litmus test” is whether or not one’s contributions appear to measure up to the credentials and experience claimed.

In any event visitors will likely determine who adds a level of substance to the conversation.

Posted by John L on 04/24 at 01:02 PM

I really just don’t care much about religion Charles because it is either irrelevant or destructive. One only needs to look at Ireland, the middle east, the Pakistan-India border, Indonesia, 911, the Papal sex scandal, residential schools,  which are only the modern manifestations of the Inquisition, the witch burnings, the Crusades, the pogroms, the Holocaust to see what religion has brought us. I am with Hitchins and Dawkins, an anti-theist.

Now these back sliders want us to teach sex education using the stork to bring babies. How far out of touch can people get?

Posted by Doug on 04/24 at 01:19 PM

John L. “In any event visitors will likely determine who adds a level of substance to the conversation.”

Yes sir old chap they will indeed!

“Now these back sliders want us to teach sex education using the stork to bring babies. How far out of touch can people get?”

I’d like to award Mr. Little’s attempt to add his “level of substance to the conversation” with my determination of
a failing grade. No level of substance that this visitor can deduce whatsoever. Even as an “always needing the last word” leaning the inspiration just isn’t there for me John.

Posted by notasheep on 04/24 at 02:18 PM

If you are not a certified teacher, you are not allowed to assign failing grades.

Toronto Medical Officer of Health says McGuinty made big mistake caving in to right wing kooks. Now we will just have a lot more STD problems.

Posted by Doug on 04/24 at 09:06 PM

Oh come now Doug. Any thinking adult can see your comments for what they are and there level of substance to the discussion is poor indeed. They’re designed to do nothing but poke your stick at that which threatens you…and make no mistake the discussion here threatens you.

Most third graders would also be as likely to assign you a failing grade - evaluation is not the premium of the certifiable.

Posted by notasheep on 04/25 at 06:10 AM

That’s the beauty of it; here we can all reflect on the quality of comments made without worrying overly much about the “qualifications”  of the person making them.

By now there’s considerable evidence to suggest that individuals, irrespective of their credentials, may or may not be able to make a good case.

Keep up the good work, SQE.

Posted by John L on 04/25 at 12:20 PM

Yes, we can run the system based on the opinions of totally unqualified people who don’t know what they are talking about. Beautiful.

Failure to heed experts on the sex ed curriculum will simply lead to more unwanted children, more abortions, more STDs, more pedophile priests, more welfare, greater costs, more misery but why listen to them when right wing pastors who are afraid of sex and women and want to control both, know so much.

Lord help us.

Posted by Doug on 04/25 at 06:43 PM

Editorial and journalistic opinion starting to turn in favour of the sex ed curriculum as written.

McGuinty has put himself in a pickel. He should have told the religious nuts to get lost at the start.

Posted by Doug on 04/26 at 11:59 AM

Re McGuinty and “religious nuts”

Kind of hard to tell them to “get lost” when your own home riding Catholic school board says no way to this and when your wife works teaching for the Toronto Catholic board.

Just saying.

Posted by doretta on 04/26 at 12:19 PM

“toally unqualified people who don’t know what they’re talking about”?

We’ve seen the quality of work put out by people who claim to be “qualified” and its pretty underwhelming.

There’s no evidence simply not introducing the new curriculum will lead to a massive increase in any of the things claimed above; this isn’t about doing away with sex ed as it currently is taught so why would there be a massive spike all of the sudden?

Posted by John L on 04/26 at 04:21 PM

Ask the Toronto Medical Officer of Health who admonished McGuinty for flip flop to the homophobes

Posted by doug on 04/26 at 04:40 PM

“for flip flop to the homophobes”.  Even if that did make sense, which it doesn’t that’d be quite a shock to all sorts of parents who gave the thumbs down on what McGuinty tried to do.

I suspect most of them wouldn’t qualify as homophobes.

Things are rarely as black and what in the real world.  As a multiple-degree holding former teacher I’d think you’d now that.

Posted by John L on 04/26 at 04:52 PM

Ho ho, who wodula thunk it, right?
