Politics makes strange bedfellows

March 03, 2016 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 08:29 AM

Click here for a thought-provoking opinion piece about The New York Times' vendetta against charter schools in general and Success Academies in particular. As the piece points out, the Times closes its eyes to all sorts of egregious teacher actions at public schools but instead zeroes in on one rather-mild-by-comparison misdemeanor at Success Academy.

This begs the question of why The Times, a very left-leaning organ, has a hate-on for charter schools. After all, these New York charter schools are giving tens of thousands of disadvantaged students a life-changing education, and you would think that The Times would be over the moon about this. Presumably it would be swooning if the same feat was being pulled off by a conventional public school? Weird.

BTW, this begs the further question of how appropriate it is for The Times - in fact, all newspapers - to push extremely biased points of view.

Follow the money.  If K-W teachers union’s can order teachers not to use the papers provided by the KW Record because of their (unpalatable to the union) editorial record, it will only take a little digging to find the bread crumb trail linking the political and financial interests to the editorial policy of the Times.

I agee with you Frank:  always follow the money!

I’m optimistic about charter schools in the U.S.  Too many parents have had a taste of honey, so-to-speak, and they won’t want to go back to union-run, totally dysfunctional public schools.

Of course the left will continue to berate charter schools where the real work is done and (gawd forbid) accountability is firmly in place, but the charter schools will continue to increase in number and quality.
