Politics makes strange bedfellows

May 20, 2015 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 06:45 AM

It has always been puzzling to me why my support of school choice consigns me to the political right. After all, I don't belong t there when it comes to many other issues. And it seems to me that my desire to give disadvantaged children a fair shot at life should fall into the lefty side of the political spectrum. But, surprisingly, traditionally the political left has been opposed to school choice.

However, this may be changing in the US, as per this report. Apparently more and more American left-wing politicians are listening to their consciences, as opposed to their party whips, and are embracing school vouchers.

Only in the US, you say? Pity!

The aspect of choice that makes it right wing is privatization not choice. The left is not concerned particularly about public school choice. The support public school alternative schools. They do become concerned when all the gifted and IB programs are in affluent schools and vocational programs are placed in poor neighbourhood.

Vouchers are clearly public money to private schools. Always a bad idea. Charters claim to be public schools but receive funds from hedge funds to top them up, pay their CEOS from private management companies $250 000 a year, and use every trick in the book to cherry pick their enrollment.

They are a reaction to the abysmal results of 20% of American schools. American schools are #17 in the world for no other reason than poverty. If schools with more than 10% poverty are removed from the data America they are competitive with Finland.

Some people have been convinced that the problem is the school. The school has nothing to do with the problem. The teachers do exactly what the teachers do in highly successful affluent schools.

The entire political culture of the USA is significantly to the right of every other democracy.

Half of Democrats would be PC if they lived in Canada. They elect exactly one democratic socialist.

The reason the left loves to name-call is because there’s still a healthy myth that the left is good and the right is bad.  The fact that the psu’s and civil servants walk all over taxpayers hasn’t quite sunk in yet; however people are beginning to wake up and realize that the psu’s have become far too powerful, self-serving and worst of all, they’re electing puppet governments that genuflect to them.

As example of the psu’s power—the fireman and police don’t even negotiate:  they simply wait for arbitration which gives them everything on their wish list.  This just happened in Windsor ON, and Eddie Francis, the mayor just received a bill for nearly 1/2 billion dollars, because the fireman in Windsor have been offered via binding arbitrator a 12% pay hike retroactive back to 2011.  As said, the fireman never even went to the table to negotiate.  This is NOT collective bargaining.  How is Windsor going to foot the bill?—by raising taxes on property owners and Windsor’s beleaguered businesses.  Do the fireman care?  Their actions don’t say they do to me.

Oh yah, during one of the provincial elections, McGuinty let the psu’s know that binding arbritation would not be changed.  He also made secret deals with hospital workers that year.  Blatant vote buying with taxpayers’ $$.

The left loves to sling mud in order to maintain the status quo, which enables the psu’s like our fireman, police and teachers to live better than engineers and lawyers.

It’s too bad that not all taxpayers have woken up to this myth that the left is good, because they’ve become corrupt and don’t care what their greed will cost the Ontario economy.

Did you know that hydro will go up by 42% by 2018?
