Once you give a tiger a piece of meat, you can’t take it back

This rally in favour of charter schools by about 13,000 New York parents, teachers, and students demonstrates why the education establishment fights so hard against the introduction of charter schools. They know that charter schools will be so popular that it will be impossible to kill them off.

So why would the education establishment want to kill off charter schools, you ask? The reason is that charter schools mean a reduction of the power and influence of the teachers' unions and school boards - fewer jobs and less revenue. Furthermore, many charter schools do a much better job than conventional public schools, making the educational establishment look bad.

The fact that charter schools can be good for kids is apparently irrelevant.  H/T TB

Kudos to the parents.

But Charter Schools don’t mean fewer jobs and less revenue, that runs against basic economic theory.  There will be MORE jobs, and possibly MORE money spent on education, it will just be spent differently.

Think about EVERY other industry.  Would there be fewer taxis if we eliminated the medallion system?  Would there be fewer doctors, dentists, and lawyers if we opened the professions to anyone who could pass a rigourous exam every 3-4 years?  No, there would be MORE taxis and dentists, they would be better trained and better qualified, they would offer better and more varied services for LESS, and people would be buying MORE of their products.

Today’s teachers have guaranteed jobs-for-life, they have no economic reason to oppose school reform.  They have no fear of layoffs, and no need to be accountable to parents or students.  Even the most incompetent teacher need not fear Charter Schools.

But public teaching is a private club, and they like it that way.  Tenured teachers opposing education reform is despicable and shameful.
