Not reading the writing on the wall

July 25, 2012 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 10:29 AM

Many years ago I went on CFRB radio talking about problems with teaching reading and trying to recruit people to join our fight. I was surprised when every single telephone call (there were at least 50 of them) were from parents looking for advice on how they could teach their own kids to read.

Today, Doretta went on CFRB talking about problems with teaching reading and trying to recruit people to join our fight, and lo and behold exactly the same thing. But at least now we can offer help - our Stairway to Reading remedial reading program. As soon as Doretta went off the air, our Stairway to Reading registrations exploded.

This doesn’t make any sense. Taught properly, virtually every child can learn to be a competent reader. See, for example, this interview with Dr. Reid Lyon, the former Chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch within the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institute of Health. There is no excuse for schools that don’t teach their students to read, and it is a scandal that nothing has changed in 20 years.

Yes, our ‘education premier’ McGuinty has done absolutely nothing about the poor reading.  What’s is baffling is that parents are happy to pay hefty amounts of tax dollars into the system, and then do the educrats’ work for them!  No wonder we can’t fix the problem!

“There is no excuse for schools that don’t teach their students to read, and it is a scandal that nothing has changed in 20 years.” And prior to the report, the education system could continued to praise their instruction methods in the 3 Rs of whole language, even though the outcomes of the students, it was obvious that a large percentage of students were not competent readers. After the report, the education system continued to used their reading instruction methods even though much of the reading instruction and by extension the writing instruction had been confirmed by the science, to be inappropriate for the vast majority of children learning to read and write.

Stairway to Reading registrations exploded because parents of 2012, are very concerned with the instruction quality concerning the 3 Rs. It is what they see in the work of their children, and their ability to read, write and do numeracy well. Their concerns are ignored for the most part at the school and board level, leaving many of a parent without the options to instruct at home. Nor do parents have the influence and power to change things at the school level, and the only options are to take on the responsibility or accept the offerings of the public education, who have more or less abdicated from teaching all students to become competent readers and by extension competent writers.

But the public education system is too busy looking in the mirror, asking the mirror who is the greatest in all things education. Time for a new mirror…..
