Manitoba’s Unstrengthened Math
Our blog has previously mentioned the Western Initiative for Strengthening Education in Math (WISE Math), a group trying to improve math instruction in Western Canada. Here is a very cool CBC chart that shows the extent of Manitoba’s math tragedy (along with a bunch of other interesting metrics that relate to all the provinces). Here is a recent op-ed piece in The Winnipeg Free Press that outlines a plan for tackling the math problem. And here is a podcast that discusses the Minister of Education’s decision to preserve the status quo. H/T RC

Thank you for posting about this. I think that there is a misunderstanding here, though. The Saskatchewan Minister of Education has decided to preserve the status quo and the podcast discusses that decision.
The Manitoba Minister of Education has made no such statement, though. In fact, Manitoba Education issued a press release on Wednesday stating that they intend to strengthen the math curriculum.

The Deputy Minister of Education in Manitoba has also made statements regarding the need to preserve some past practices that worked (like memorization of times tables). See this Winnipeg Free Press article:

Thursday, on CJOB, the Deputy Minister said that we could expect to see some changes to the math curriculum by September.
We have not seen specific details yet, (and yes, the devil is in the details), but we are hopeful that some positive changes will be made in Manitoba.
