Let a thousand flowers bloom

Let a thousand flowers bloom

In the vein of different strokes for different folks, there's an article in today's Globe and Mail about a Calgary private school that uses their students' love of sports as a way to reach them academically. Obviously this kind of school would work for some students, but not for others. My own children, I'm sure, would have responded well to a school that specialized in video games. I'm joking, but the truth is that kids (and teachers) have different interests and motivations, and so the more schools with different specialties, the better the chances that there will be a good match for everyone. Just a few possibilities - Montessori schools, chess schools, all-girls schools, hi-tech schools, Spanish-immersion schools, IB schools, auto mechanics schools, dance schools, science schools, year-round schools, intensive academic schools, music schools, virtual schools, Girl Guide schools, traditional schools, Waldorf schools, horticultural schools, and the list goes on.

The Edge School’s philosophy has spread into the Alberta’s public education system.

“The concept of a High Performance Sports Program in Grande Prairie using the Edge Program
framework and philosophy was first brought to the District?s attention by Brett Stephenson, a
member of the Board of Directors of the Grande Prairie Storm Athletic Association. Discussions began on forming a partnership between the GPPSD and Edge School in late 2009. The
partnership was made official on Jan. 26, 2010. Edge School will be bringing world-class
coaching and ideas to Grande Prairie Public as an alternate program in the District. According
to Edge School?s philosophy, this program is about using world class sport development programming as a vehicle for unlocking the academic and leadership potential in young people.”

In the Globe article, it never ceases to amaze me, the number of naysayers, with their buts. For example, “It?s a fine line. Jean C?t?, a professor of sport psychology at Queen?s University, says that while techniques like imagery and self-talk might be helpful to students in the classroom and on the field, they may undermine some of spontaneity that makes sport fun.

?Just let the kids play,? he said.”

If I let my kid just play in swimming, she would never have learned to embrace academic challenges and handle academic failure. To this day, my child takes the lessons of competitive swimming and applies it to her studies, and a good thing she does, she has been confronted with the naysayers in her life, inserting their negative tracks into my child’s head.

Would it not be wonderful, if the Edge philosophy was brought to the public education system as one of the keys to unlock the academic potential of students, especially the low achievers and under-achieving students?

Just wishing….....

“...they may undermine some of spontaneity that makes sport fun.”

The prof. of sport psychology speaks as though he’s never won anything at sports.

At the competitive level, the fun comes from being better skilled than the competition and….wait for it…...winning!

When did it become a crime to be proud of being skilled enough at something to savour being a champion?

Master the skills, get rewarded and it’s part of the game to lose once in a while.
