It made a difference to that one…...
There's an area of Alabama where all the public schools are classed as "failing", meaning that Alabama's new scholarship program that lets students in failing schools escape to a private school is critically important to the disadvantaged students in these failing schools who would otherwise be trapped forever. However, the Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a court challenge to the new scholarship program on the grounds that it will hurt the students who don't escape - because their failing schools will lose funding and thus start failing their students even worse.
This column by Jason Bedrick provides more detail about the Alabama situation and tells the story of a little boy who was rescuing starfish by throwing them back one by one and, when someone tells the little boy he can't make any difference because there are so many starfish and they're already starting to die, the little boy tosses another starfish to safety and says "It made a difference to that one".
If we wait for education solutions that will help every child, we will end up helping not even one child.
