Here We Go Again

March 10, 2015 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 07:26 AM

The Catholic Teachers' Association is rattling its sabres, according to this article, as we kick off the next round of teacher labour strife in Ontario. The only thing you can be sure of is that the union's real reason for opposing the proposed contract is not that it will "seriously erode teacher autonomy and demoralize the profession".

If the union were truly worried about this, it would hardly be pointing the danger out to its teachers but rather working behind the scenes to mitigate any threat of demoralization while taking steps of its own to protect teacher professionalism. In fact, the union's position on things like teacher pay and seniority issues is pre-determined and aligns with the union's own self interest. However, since the union would be less convincing if it opposed teacher salary freezes on the grounds that such a policy would affect its own well-being, the union takes the position that teacher salary freezes would be bad for teachers (and hence students).

Get ready for some serious spinning!  H/T TB

People act somehow surprised that a union acts in the interests of its members? There is nevertheless, a strong belief in the profession that what is good for teachers is good for students.

CO Howe acknowledged that higher results are associated with higher pay.

Doug,

A good, pithy sum up of the Fixed Deterministic Mindset which drives unions and most of their subscribers. I would say it is axiomatic. As far as CD Howe’s commentary, please post the link.

In the meantime, I would suggest that many folks are more aligned with the view that intelligence can be developed; and that we can learn from criticism and find lessons and inspiration in the success of others. When this road is taken, much higher levels of achievement are achieved along with a greater sense of free will.

Interesting how it boils down to a free will versus determinism argument/discussion smile

The Co Howe finding is easily found with Google but required a pdf download my phone can’t handle.

The poor are quite able to learn but it is not changes in schools that change their fate but changes outside the school that matter. Nutrition, birth weight, stress, ..... read David Berlin on this. He lists all the factors.

Here we go with another dog and pony show between the teacher’s union and the liberal government.

The government will pretend to make a fuss while the unions will huff and puff and eventually get what they want.

You’d think the public would be wise to the game by now.

Higher results may mean higher pay for salesmen but the idea that you have to pay more to hire the best people is a fabrication.

Honest people who like what they do aren’t motivated by bigger salaries.
