Cardiac Evidence
I decided to write about this column mainly because I loved the phrase "cardiac evidence" - the kind of evidence where people just know in their heart that something is true, disregarding all evidence to the contrary.
The column is discussing state-funded preschool (such as we have in Ontario to a greater extent than almost any other jurisdiction), pointing out that it is very costly babysitting. Its proponents cling to it nevertheless, despite compelling evidence that any gains - cognitive, social-emotional, health, or parenting practices - wash out by the end of grade 3.
The Heritage Foundation suggests that if administrators are determined to continue with state-funded preschool, a possible way to improve outcomes would be to voucherize the funding and allow parents to choose the school - public or private - that best suits their children's needs.
