Beyond the Bake Sale

If you are a parent who spends countless volunteer hours at your child's school, perhaps serving on the school council and helping with fundraising, you should definitely read this article. The author is a journalist who has studied international school systems in depth, and she has found that successful countries don't see parents at their children's schools very much at all. Instead, the parents tend to be much more involved in their children's education at home. "There is a lot of emphasis on parents and teachers being a team together to help the student learn."

This is good news bad news for some, as volunteering at the school's bake sale and going along on class trips can be rewarding and lots of fun, while rolling up your sleeves and helping with your son's math homework - not so much. Nevertheless, if you really want your child to do better at school, it seems you're going to have to do some of the heavy lifting yourself.  H/T GG
