A Notion From “The Fringe”

August 25, 2012 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 08:18 AM

Last week a blogger, Wendy’s Education List, cited the Chris Blizzard Toronto Sun article in which I was quoted. If you scroll down to Sunday, Aug. 19th in Education News from Ontario, you will see she also added her comment, “Warning: Complete BS alert! Quotes the fringe neo-con SQE which supports all of the right-wing notions that don’t work anywhere.”  We must be doing something right if such an “all-knowing expert” OSSTF staffer has to make such a ridiculous statement!

Here’s one “notion” that we KNOW works—systematic, explicit phonics.  There are decades of sound research to back up the claim. Our own Stairway to Reading was developed to help students who are struggling, but it is also a good way for parents to prepare younger children for school.

So “Wendy” don’t complain when you get a high school student that can barely read beyond a grade two or three level.  Those “fringe” experts such as Stanowich, Adams, Chall, et al. must know something.

Comments

Later on in the week, I think I will write to Wendy, and give her a reality check on the education stats of final outcomes. Plus a few more that are buried that should shed some light on the state of english in Canada’s high schools.

” OSSTF Motto: “Let us not take thought for our separate interests, but let us help one another.””

I wonder if the OSSTF could help a few parents and their teenagers of why they are being denied accommodations for formally identified disabilities, so they too are able to take advantage of advance and academic courses. I wonder if she knows, that the majority of students with formally identified disabilities of language difficulties and leaning disabilities are in the applied and basic courses, because the public education system are not following the so called fringe experts such as Stanowich, Adams, Chall, et al.

I can’t wait for the response from a high school English teacher…....

Nancy I think what the unions hate the most is our stance on school choice for obvious reasons.

The unions would not in the spot they are today, if they explored the reasons underneath why school choice has emerge in the 21st century.

This should work

“We must be doing something right if such an “all-knowing expert” OSSTF staffer has to make such a ridiculous statement!”

SQE should be used to this by now. Doug Little has posted much worse on various blogs and if I remember correctly slammed Malkin and SQE pretty good on his own website.

As for Wendy…..just more of the OSSTF talking points.

Never good when a, presumably, highly educated and professional adult resorts to language more appropriate for an angry tween.

While we’re on the issue I sure would appreciate if the various politicians and their union counterparts would stop framing their fight as a battle to “put kids first”.  Do they really think everyone else is so dense that we can’t see self-serving nonsense; this is entirely around teacher salaries and benefits versus a premier who has painted himself into a corner.  Kids are the last things either side is putting first.

Fight your battle on your own merits, not as a battle for kids!

Parents and taxpayers have known for a long, long time. Kids might rank a close 4th in this right behind what’s political opportunism, union spin and the self-absorbed egos of both.

The point of my original post is to call attention to the fact that effective teaching practice is not some BS right-wing notion.  Proven methods work.  See the Monday post for what teachers really think.

I took the whole post into consideration when reading it actually.

Agreed

I’m pretty sceptical when something like teaching kids becomes an ideology war; heck some core principles in how kids learn have been proven over centuries, yet there seems a sort of “flavour of the day” mindset among some “experts” as to how to do it…?  Kids learning really doesn’t lend itself to the left/right worldview.
