12 Myths About Dyslexia

August 26, 2015 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 10:09 AM

Tom Berend sent me this link about dyslexia. My experience as a reading tutor tells me that every word is true. Here's one of the myths just to get you started.

Myth 3: Dyslexia is a ‘gift’.
The facts: For dyslexics who haven’t learned to read properly, dyslexia is a condition which causes nothing but unhappiness. We have taught over 1,000 pupils, and not one of them has ever had a good thing to say about being dyslexic. One commented, “If dyslexia is a gift, they can have it back”.

I was curious how a clickbait site had such a great article, and discovered it was copied from the Promethean Trust, a British charity set up by Tom Burkard who was an early promoter of systematic phonics in UK schools.  Here’s the original:
http://www.prometheantrust.org/dyslexiamyths.htm

I posted it into the ‘Dyslexia’ group on Facebook, where it immediately attracted viperous commentary.  Some writers were outraged that their Gift was being maligned, others were insistent that dyslexia could not be cured, did not need to be cured, could be treated with coloured filters, diet suppliments, and so on.

Others talked how cruel this article was to their dyslexic child who could not tie his shoelaces or remember her cat’s name (nothing to do with dyslexia).  Others spat that the writer obviously knew nothing about dyslexia.  Oddly, myth #8 drew particular ire.

Within a day, the group administrator pulled that offensive post down.

So a worried mom comes looking for advice.  She hears “Dyslexia can’t be cured. Your son simply thinks differently. Dyslexia is a gift, he will be awesome when he grows up.”  The schools don’t say any different (at least until the child fails OSSLT, after which it’s not their problem anymore).

We know that intensive intervention cures dyslexia, but it is hard work, and requires huge commitment of time, money, and attention.  It requires URGENCY.  The bad and conflicting advice on the internet drain that urgency So mom doesn’t act, just sends the kid to school, pretends he’s doing well, and hopes.

The forces of darkness are winning.

Be polite and respectful. Stay on-topic. State your position clearly and write succinctly. Provide support for claims. Don't hog the microphone. Strong opinions are OK, but outrage is not. Don't post just to upset others.
