Parent Trigger Laws - Sometimes it can be difficult to pull the trigger

April 13, 2013 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 07:19 AM

At present, seven US states have "parent trigger" laws that theoretically make it possible for parents to take control of failing schools. Of course, the schools don't want to be taken control of, and here is an article about the dirty tricks they have used in an effort to avoid being taken over. It looks as if other parents are getting smarter though, learning how to make the parent trigger laws work for them, and so this story is essentially an optimistic one.

Of course, in Ontario we couldn't have parent trigger laws because we have no way of identifying failing schools.

Its the public education model, its structure, its governance, the education stakeholders composed of educators with various degrees and their refusal to share their authority granted to the, by the legislation acts.

In another U.S. state, a senator is stalked by a 7 year old girl, asking the question why are you picking on welfare parents. The senator eventually dropped the proposed law, of taking away welfare benefits, if parents do not come to 2 required teacher/parent interviews. When I was reading it, pretty effective, but in Canada, they probably would tossed the kids into child protection services and arrest the parents. No doubt done in the same fashion when high school seniors point out the hypocrisy of the administration, and more so with some of the crazy rules that administrators come up with, just to maintain their dictatorial authority over what is and what will not be an education for a child.

To which leads me to the crux of the problem, and parent trigger laws. Parent trigger laws was a solution to the root of many of a public school, that is no longer educating children, but providing the students with a sub-par education and guarantee to sentence children with low levels of reading, writing and numeracy. Of course the education establishment is much against it, and will fight tooth and nail to maintained the sub-par education and offer as solutions that amounts to window dressing. Its like having the Apple store comes into town, and the residents walk into the store, admiring the Apple products, but they don’t buy because there is no internet infrastructure to make use of the Apple products.

The same can be applied to the education establishment and their solutions as outlined in the article - “Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, believes the parent trigger is a bad idea. Her answer to schools that have failed to teach year after year after year under her watch is to establish “School Governance Councils”:

In Cincinnati and elsewhere, AFT locals are partnering with parents and communities to mitigate the impact that poverty and other out-of-school factors have on students by offering wraparound services, including physical and mental health services, meal programs, tutoring, counseling, and after-school programs. And just last month, the AFT joined with parents and community members to launch a series of town hall meetings, teach-ins, workshops, and other events in 11 cities across the nation.”

Which begs the question - what are the public schools doing, during the school day, because it sure ain’t teaching the children. They are too busy with the window dressing!

The education establishment will fight everything, including the two U.S. lawsuits where the community and parents are suing the school and school district, for failing to teach their kids to read. As with parent trigger laws, the teachers unions and the school district joins forces to beat up the parents and the silly children who would like to learn to read, write and do numeracy well. The basic foundation stuff that is crucial to have if one wants to have an education that will lead to a brighter future for children.

The same kind of stuff goes on here in Canada. The Canadian education establishment are smug, knowing full well they are no longer providing an education for the children that ensures bright futures. They remain smug, because they have all the political and social capital to ensure that they will maintain their authority over what is and what will not be an education for children.

But not for long, because parents are getting themselves educated and becoming wise to the tricks of the public education system that would rather not to educate children, but to schooled them.
